How a 48 team single elimination bracket works

A single elimination bracket only pairs up evenly at a power of two (4, 8, 16, 32, 64), so 48 teams go into a 64-slot bracket. The 16 empty slots become byes for seeds 1 to 16, who start in round 2. Round 1 has 16 games, played by seeds 17 to 48.

There are 47 games in total. Each game knocks out one team and every team except the champion is knocked out once, so a single elimination bracket always has one game fewer than it has teams. The games are played over 6 rounds, and the champion plays 6 games, or 5 if it is one of the seeds with a bye.

Seeds are placed so the strongest teams meet as late as possible: 1 and 2 are in opposite halves and can only meet in the final, and seeds 1 to 4 are in separate quarters, so they can only meet from the semifinals on.

Questions

How many games are in a 48 team single elimination bracket?

47. Each game knocks out one team, and every team except the champion is knocked out once.

Who gets a bye in a 48 team bracket?

Seeds 1 To 16. 48 teams go into a 64-slot bracket, which leaves 16 empty slots. The byes go to the top seeds, who start in round 2, so a higher seed earns an easier path.

How long does a 48 team single elimination tournament take?

With one court and 30-minute games, the 47 games take 23.5 hours back to back. With enough courts to play every ready game at once, it takes 6 rounds, about 3 hours, because each game waits for the games that feed it.

Is there a third-place game?

Not in the bracket itself. If you want one, the two semifinal losers (the losers of G45 and G46) play one extra game after the semifinals.
