How a 29 team single elimination bracket works

A single elimination bracket only pairs up evenly at a power of two (4, 8, 16, 32, 64), so 29 teams go into a 32-slot bracket. The 3 empty slots become byes for seeds 1 to 3, who start in round 2. Round 1 has 13 games, played by seeds 4 to 29.

There are 28 games in total. Each game knocks out one team and every team except the champion is knocked out once, so a single elimination bracket always has one game fewer than it has teams. The games are played over 5 rounds, and the champion plays 5 games, or 4 if it is one of the seeds with a bye.

Seeds are placed so the strongest teams meet as late as possible: 1 and 2 are in opposite halves and can only meet in the final, and seeds 1 to 4 are in separate quarters, so they can only meet from the semifinals on.

Questions

How many games are in a 29 team single elimination bracket?

28. Each game knocks out one team, and every team except the champion is knocked out once.

Who gets a bye in a 29 team bracket?

Seeds 1 To 3. 29 teams go into a 32-slot bracket, which leaves 3 empty slots. The byes go to the top seeds, who start in round 2, so a higher seed earns an easier path.

How long does a 29 team single elimination tournament take?

With one court and 30-minute games, the 28 games take 14 hours back to back. With enough courts to play every ready game at once, it takes 5 rounds, about 2.5 hours, because each game waits for the games that feed it.

Is there a third-place game?

Not in the bracket itself. If you want one, the two semifinal losers (the losers of G26 and G27) play one extra game after the semifinals.
