How a 19 team single elimination bracket works
A single elimination bracket only pairs up evenly at a power of two (4, 8, 16, 32, 64), so 19 teams go into a 32-slot bracket. The 13 empty slots become byes for seeds 1 to 13, who start in round 2. Round 1 has 3 games, played by seeds 14 to 19.
There are 18 games in total. Each game knocks out one team and every team except the champion is knocked out once, so a single elimination bracket always has one game fewer than it has teams. The games are played over 5 rounds, and the champion plays 5 games, or 4 if it is one of the seeds with a bye.
Seeds are placed so the strongest teams meet as late as possible: 1 and 2 are in opposite halves and can only meet in the final, and seeds 1 to 4 are in separate quarters, so they can only meet from the semifinals on.

Questions
How many games are in a 19 team single elimination bracket?
18. Each game knocks out one team, and every team except the champion is knocked out once.
Who gets a bye in a 19 team bracket?
Seeds 1 To 13. 19 teams go into a 32-slot bracket, which leaves 13 empty slots. The byes go to the top seeds, who start in round 2, so a higher seed earns an easier path.
How long does a 19 team single elimination tournament take?
With one court and 30-minute games, the 18 games take 9 hours back to back. With enough courts to play every ready game at once, it takes 5 rounds, about 2.5 hours, because each game waits for the games that feed it.
Is there a third-place game?
Not in the bracket itself. If you want one, the two semifinal losers (the losers of G16 and G17) play one extra game after the semifinals.
