Everyone gets a second chance. Teams drop into the lower bracket after their first loss and are eliminated after their second. The lower-bracket winner meets the upper-bracket winner in the grand final, with an optional reset match if the lower-bracket team wins.

How many games are in a double elimination bracket?
Twice the number of teams minus two, plus one more if the grand final needs a reset. Every team except the champion loses exactly twice.
What is a grand final reset?
The upper-bracket winner has not lost yet. If the lower-bracket team wins the grand final, both teams have one loss, so a second deciding match is played.
How do byes work in double elimination?
Byes are placed in the upper bracket round one for the top seeds. The lower bracket is routed so that no team plays a bye twice in a row.
